Ariana DeBose is a trailblazer in the film industry. Award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards went to the star of So You Think You Can Dance.
So far, DeBose’s performance in West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg, has dominated the awards season.

For the outstanding performer, this is the first time she has been nominated for a SAG Award, and she also happens to be the first one to take home the trophy. As DeBose pointed out in her victory speech, her background is in dance and Theater, so this achievement is very meaningful for her career as an actress. At least among the upper crust of Hollywood.
During her award speech, DeBose reflected on how difficult it had been for her to embrace the identity of an actor. DeBose is the first openly lesbian woman of colour to be nominated for and win this award. This year’s Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes went to the SYTYCD star, adding to her already historic year in Hollywood.
The actress will then move on to compete for the same award at the 2022 Academy Awards. For the Oscars this year, DeBose will have some serious rivals. This year’s list of nominees is rounded out by Jessie Buckley, Judi Dench, Kristen Dunst, and Aunjanue Ellis.

When DeBose made it into the Top 20 in Season 6 of the popular dance competition, she was only 18 years old. On the first week of the competition, she performed a jazz number that boosted her out of last place. Even though DeBose’s career didn’t take off during the show’s pilot, she’s gone on to do incredible things.
After playing Nautica in the 2011 Alliance Theatre production of Bring It On, DeBose was cast more frequently in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions as a dancer. DeBose has not slowed down at all since she first appeared on stage.
In early 2015, the West Side Story actress became a part of the ensemble cast of the off-Broadway musical Hamilton. During that year, the production made the leap to Broadway, where it immediately became a smash hit. For her dancing in the production, she received an Astaire Award nomination.
Later in 2017, DeBose appeared in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, where she played the part of Disco Donna. On April of 2018, she returned to her role on Broadway.
